Tenant storing things in common area. Can I put it out?

We had a tenant leave their personal items in the shared laundry room for an unreasonable amount of time (three days), in violation of our laundry room rules. I didn't know which tenant the items belonged to, so I left a note on the laundry room door that stated.... "Items left unattended overnight in the laundry room have been removed. Contact the property manager to retrieve your belongings." That did the trick! The tenant sheepishly called me and when I handed her belongings back to her we had an opportunity to talk face-to-face about what we needed her to do. We kept our communication "Swift, Polite, Firm, and Fair." No feelings hurt and all the tenants saw that we enforce our rules, which motivates them to comply.
