Tenant wants section 8- I want tenant out

Sara Maree
Posted

My tenants are on a month-to-month lease. I am going to sell my condo soon, and I was planning to post the non-renewal notice September 1st. I just got a text from the tenant stating she is now eligible for Section 8, and she wants me to go through the process to be able to accept vouchers.

Should I tell her via text that I plan to sell, and she should start looking elsewhere? Should I not respond at all and just post the notice today?

Since circumstances have changed for her anyway, I'd just give her a heads up and reply back now that you were not planning to renew her lease because you are putting the condo up for sale.  As such, you will not be going through the process with S8 for this property.

I'd then also post the official notice the next time it is convenient (though definitely by/before Sept. 1st).

If you're open to her leaving sooner than Sept. 30th without any break-lease consequences if she finds another place before then, I'd let her know that also.  Could turn out to be a win-win for you both.  She has more time/flexibility in the move-in for her next place and you can put the condo up for sale sooner (if that's your preference).
