Security Deposit Refund ... To Which Tenant???

I rented a unit to a couple three years ago. Since then they have become unhappy with each other and are going their separate ways. They are both on the lease although the check for the deposit was paid from one of the named tenant's account only. The rent has either been paid out of that account or via cash for the length of their stay. Do I return the deposit to both of them i.e. Jane Doe AND John Doe? I'm at a loss here and don't want to be in the middle of their personal fight.
