Applicants have always provided their SSN on the application but today 3 of them left that line blank. I have never encountered this refusal to provide important information. I was liking them until they submitted incomplete applications. What do you think?
Talk to them about it. Could be nothing, could be something. I never write important personal information like that on anything unless I absolutely need to. Maybe they don't realize that they need to give it to you.
Maybe have had problems before. I would not discount them unless I needed a reason to refuse.
Does take a extra phone call. Look over the app. If you think everything else looks good. Call and tell them the next step is a credit report but you need the SS number.
If they dont give it. Chances are it is not a problem with identity theft. But trying to hide something. And hoping that you are a LL that does not do credit or background checks.
Simple phone call to find out.
Where I live we get this a lot. Most of the time it's immigrants and most of the time they are good people, but it's a bummer that you cannot perform credit or background checks on them....
It's a tought choice to make whether you should rent to them or not.
very common here too, also many of them are showing with Mexico Driver License haha I was surprise at the beginning :) but they have good job and actually their income is better than let's say, those who have SSN. Yes, I rent out to them. Some of them are having successful construction company and I start amazed how they have been struggling and successful without even having SSN.
Not providing SSN and/or DL is an automatic fail from me. From my experience, every applicant who either refuses to provide either of these info or "forgot" to have always been 99% problem tenants in the past and future.
I very strongly advice you to move on to someone else. Trust me, if you let this go you will regret it.
Some don't do it because it could end up in bad hands. I don't even provide it on the yearly report I fill out when I go to the doc's. They should already have it on file, so why do I need to risk having the wrong person see it?
If I were to be filling out rental apps I would put that I would be willing to share it when it is necessary. I.e. tell me you want to move forward with me as a tenant (pending whatever you need my SSN for), then at that time I will provide it.
It's 2021. We don't need SSN's to do background checks anymore. You can send it to the tenant via cozy and they can enter their own information. I only ask for SSN's at lease signing and that's to keep on file in case we have to ever evict.
@Jane S. It could be a simple misunderstanding, A lot of people I know are weary about providing that. I would call and communicate that you need that for whatever reason.
This business is all about clear communication.
