Turning primary residence to short term rental - Military move abroad

Hello Bigger Pockets Forum!

My husband is active duty military. We're both Florida residents and bought our single-family primary residence in 2021 in San Diego, CA with a VA loan. We're scheduled to move to Japan for 2 years starting in July of 2024.

We'd like to turn this property into a short-term rental during our time abroad. I'm getting the application process started with our city to obtain a license to do short-term rentals.

With this being - said we're thinking that it might be time to get an accountant to support us during tax season as we enter this new venture.

Has anyone gone through a similar situation, have any tips, and recommendations on an accountant/CPA that specializes in these types of situations?

Appreciate any and all advice.

Sincerely,

Short-term rental newbie.

Definitely find a CPA that knows and does STR properties! Not all CPA know the tax benefits you can receive.
