Detroit Short Term rentals

Looking for advice on acquiring single family homes for short term rental investments in the Detroit, MI area.

I was flying to Florida to hang out with @Luke Carl on his yacht.  The guy sitting next to me was wearing a Detroit Lions jersey, so I asked him if that was where he was from.  He said he was.  I asked him if the crime in Detroit is as bad as what I've read and heard about in the news.  

He said "I've lived in Detroit all my life. It's not as bad as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business, enroll your kids in a nice private school. It's as safe a place as anywhere in the world." 

I asked him what he did for a living.  He said "I'm a tail gunner on a Budweiser truck."
