Hi guys, I am a 33 year old guy currently living in Brooklyn New York. I work as a barber and I have gotten pretty serious about saving over the past few years. I have been interested in the concept of investing in a rental property for a while now but had no real clue where to even begin. This led me here and I am really glad I found this website and I hope to learn a lot about real estate investing.
Thanks
Mark

Thank you guys. Any recommendations for particular articles or podcast episodes that focus specifically on investing in your first rental property. My goal is to start small and keep things simple in the beginning. Thanks again!

Welcome to biggerpockets!
Congrats on being able to save some reserves with the intent to purchase a real estate investment property.
Have you decided on a market to invest in?
Have you talked with a lender to see how much you qualify to purchase?
There are a couple of BP podcasts where the guests interviewed like 3-4 "new" investors and spoke with them on the same podcast.
Good luck in your investing career!

Thanks, I am currently just trying to educate myself on the process of investing in a rental property and trying to formulate something of a plan. I haven't really thought specifically about which market(s) I wish to target but my general idea is upstate NY. Having lived in the Nyc for almost a decade now I have seen a lot of small towns in upstate NY become very desirable places to live. I haven't spoken with any lenders just yet and I am a little concerned about the fact that I am an independent contractor so I don't have the same consistent records that many salary employees have. I was wondering if banks are more flexible with lending to somebody like me if I pay a higher % down on a mortgage. I would generally prefer to keep loans to a minimum and would rather put in more of my own savings. Not sure if this is even a thing but thought I would mention it : )
Cheers!
