Recently thrust into real estate(com & residential)

Posted

Hi all, My name is Brian and I'm from the SE Houston area in galveston county. As my title eludes to I have been thrust into real estate due to a string of unfortunate events. Starting in 2016 up until this year my family has suffered the loss of all of it's members other than myself and my sister. My grandfather and father were both into owning/renting commercial and residential properties which my sister and I have now inherited. Obviously neither of us were really prepared for this, I had a career in the automotive service industry at a chevrolet dealer and she is a records keeping manager for a three letter agency in DC. I had been laid off at the start of covid-19 and shortly after we lost my grandfather who was the patriarch of the family. So for the last month or so I have been studying real estate and I think I have come to the conclusion that i want to get away from the single door and small commercial strip centers we have and move towards multi family/apartment complexes. I like the idea of anonymity and having an income cushion baked into the cake. I have been watching my family over the last 10 years or so struggle to keep some of the places rented out while also being able to afford to maintain them. Every property we own was built between 1960's and 1980's and is in one state of disrepair or another. So I've come here to learn all that I can about real estate and especially multi family real estate investing. I know this is going to be a long and difficult road but I'm all in. This is my new profession and there's no turning back.

So in short I guess I would ask for any book/course/thread recommendations I should look into? I've been searching and it seems like information overload.
