Newbie from NYC

Hello! I am a complete newbie in the New York City area. The investment strategies that I am most interested in are rehabbing and buy & hold. I want to buy 1-4 unit homes in the NY and NJ area. In the near term I would also like to invest in areas farther away, and perhaps also invest in mobile homes. I am trying to decide if my first investment property should also be my primary residence (Specifically, a multi family in NYC or NJ that I can rehab and rent a portion of.). I have been very interested in becoming a real estate investor for some time but I did not know where/how to start. I am very glad to find BP and this amazing community of investors!
