Newbie from NY/FL

Hello everyone,

My name is Henry and I'm completely new to real estate. I'm 26 and I am a month away from finishing medical school in Manhattan. I will be staying in the city for 4-5 more years to complete a residency and then I would like to move back to South Florida.

I enjoy practicing medicine very much but I have been interested in RE investing ever since I picked up some Robert Kiyosaki books in early high school. I'm still fleshing out my goals but I know I would like to continue practicing medicine and use real estate as a way to generate enough passive income to be able to work because I "want" to and not because I "have" to. I've been reading some of the very helpful and friendly posts on these forums as well as the getting started guide and I thought now would be a good time to introduce myself.

At this point, I have no money (six figures in student debt) and I know that during the next few years of training I won't have much time because I will be working at the hospital 80-100 hours a week. I am here so I can learn as much as possible so that, when I finish in a few years and start earning more substantial sums of money and having more free time, I will be able to invest in RE. Given what I anticipate to be able to make/save in capital, I think I would like to focus on small/medium MF and small apartment complex long-term rentals. I'd be looking at RE in South Florida rather than Manhattan. Given that I'd still be practicing medicine, I would also like to learn more about property managers and some of those options.

Clearly I'm still figuring things out and trying to get the basics but hopefully after some time everything will start coming together. I'm looking forward to joining the BP community and meeting/working with many of you :). Thanks!

Hi Henry M,

Welcome top BP!

Ouch! Six figures in student debt is massive. I hope you pay it down quickly as your medical career takes off.

BiggerPockets is a great place to supplement your real estate education and ask questions of the community since there are a lot of people here with years of experience and knowledge. I started when I was 18 years old -- just jumping in head first -- and eventually built a business around my passion for real estate investing.

Be sure to add a photo of yourself to your BP profile.

Jump in to the community and let us know what your thinking as you try to figure things out. It will come together for you soon enough!

Continues success!
