Looking for help about possible short sale

Ok, so here's the thing. 

Sadly, my uncle just passed away unexpectedly this last weekend and left behind a wife and 2 children. 

Well, I just found out that he hasn't made a house payment in a months and now, on top of him passing away, his wife and children don't get to take this time for mourning,  and have to instead try to quickly pack everything up and find a new place to live. 

I haven't gotten started with my investments yet as im currently still working on getting my finances in order (thankfully im much closer than i was when i made my first post)or else id try to do something to help them. 

I've been learning what I can through the podcasts but it's been so long since I heard the episode about short sales I dont really remember everything about it plus I dont remember what episode it was. 

I was wondering if someone could possibly help explain how to do that. I dont know if it's to late to negotiate with the bank or not or how that works up here in North Dakota.
