Architect fees on ranch reno

Sabine French

Hey all. I’ve done DIY renos and updates in the past with my now wasband. This’ll be my first working with a contractor. I’m updating half of a 1960 ranch —basically doing what we do with ranches: removing a load bearing wall to create an open concept kitchen/LR and also raise the ceiling (they are currently very low) and add some “solatubes.” Upon completion, I plan to move into this house while working on other RE projects nearby.
There is only one architectural firm around and they quoted me $5000 for drawings, which feels high? Wondering about having a draughtsman do drawings and then take them to an engineer? Or is that just the going rate for drawings (in a market where houses sell for under $100 s/f). TIA.
