Hey guys! We tried painting the ceiling in the garage in one of our rentals and the original paint pealed onto the roller the moment we put the new paint. What do you think the reason might be?

I would prep the whole area, take off the old paint by scraping the ceiling and then prime it and then paint.

Original paint was not done correctly or there was moisture that allowed the paint to pull free.

@Mojgan Azar It could be moisture, poor surface prep, or incompatible paint types. A primer and proper cleaning usually solve it before repainting.

As others have said, either the paint was oil based and you used latex based paint over it but in any case, remove the old paint and use oil based primer (we swear by Red Kilz) to seal it and then paint over it with a latex flat ceiling paint . . . you should be fine. If the ceiling is drywall, make sure it is not wet indicating a leak from above (either the roof or from something above it)

Another option is the original paint was oil based and you are using latex. If that is the case, you have to use a special primer to let you transition from oil to latex.

Definitely have to scrape off any loose paint before painting . Its just loose paint due to its age most likely
