finding reliable workers

I have been looking and calling for almost a week to electricians, handymen,painters etc
Very few have shown up to give estimates some reasonable some outrageous. I even drove to home depo at 6:30 this morning per some advice for workers and only a handfull contractors were there. How do I get good help to show up ?
