Private Contractors or Company??

I understand finding a private construction crew is cheap and can be beneficial. I know it can also be a nightmare. Has anyone ever just gone with a company, forked out the extra dollars and had things done the correct way and quickly? What do you guys think I should do? I'm extremely new but want to get started right away. I have some wiggle room financially. Thanks!
