The reason Costa Rica is expensive, is because it is the most stable state in Central America - Politically and economically. The country doesn't have an army.
Costa Rica found a gold mine many, many years ago in promoting nature and the environment and adapted the slogan "Pura Vida" as a way of life (Pure life)
Having said all that, as the result of the international economic slowdown, Costa Rica start to feel the pinch as well. The demand for land and SFR is by no means as it was 3-5 years ago.
I believe that the slow down will continue.
If anyone consider buying land, be very careful. There are areas that were designated by the government as "green" and building permits may not be issued. Also check the infrastructure (Water, Power, telephone) . lots of very attractive land offered for sale, have no infrastructure whatsoever and bringing it in can be very costly.
Due diligence is a must!!
If you consider the pacific (Which is more desirable) be aware that there are areas that are only accessible via a ferry (Puntarenas for instance).

This is one of the most beautiful and peaceful countries in the world and I love it.
