Social Media and Business

I use social media everyday for my business. I have found it valuable if leveraged in a creative manner. However, it does not play a large role in my “normal” life. Over the years I have found it fun to be able to keep up with people from my past in a passive manner but that has mainly been the extent for me. I don’t post things very often and I don’t get engaged in long arguments over current events. What I am having a difficult time understanding is how people don’t realize that what they say on social media is a reflection of how people view them. If you are posting something provocative or controversial, no matter how much you believe in it, you are alienating a segment of the population. If you are in business of any kind people are inevitably going to find you on social media. We use it to track people down every day in our business! I have seen many people in the Real Estate business post racist, homophobic, sexist, crude, embarrassing stuff with little to no thought. If that is the portrait you want to paint, fine more power to you, but don’t be surprised when it comes back at you in a negative manner.
