Hard Money Lenders...Do you prefer out of state or in state?

I am looking into Hard Money Lenders and am not sure which direction to go. I am in NC and not sure if I should stay in state with a Hard Money Lender or go out of state...do ones have preferences? I assume on which one provides the better deal but being that it will be the first time for myself where would I fair the best?
