Basement Househacking Experience Sharing

Account Closed
Posted

Hello all,

For peeps who house-hacked using your basement, did you bolt your basement door coming up the stairs?
Short-term or long-term?
Some do's and donts?

Any advice and experience sharing is appreciated!

Thanks.

Yes. I know someone who had a basement suite (and when in university, I lived in one).  That door needs to be locked.

Decide what works best for you.  Do you want to live in the basement and rent out the upstairs?  You can get more for rent, but it depends on your goals and what works for you.  Remember, they are your tenant, not for your friend.  Make sure you have clear rules about laundry, use of the yard and parking.

Thanks Theresa, I was thinking, how would receiving mails work?
Yeah rules are quiet important, I think I definitely want to take the upstairs, maybe AirBnB downstairs...

If you AirBNB the basement, mail delivery won't matter.  If the post office won't allow for an A and B unit, then work it out amongst the tenants.  When I was in a basement suite, the owner who lived upstairs would leave the mail either in a basket in the laundry room or slide it under the door to our unit.
