Hi Dan, welcome to BP! I live in the Hudson Valley myself. Newburgh is probably 40 minutes away though. Have you been to any REIA meetings up there?

Hi All, Did any of you rent to ND students?  I know the school has built up around its property with the ice skating rink and Eddy Street Commons.  I wonder if land has any value there to build SFHs or if buying a house to rent in the area is worth it.

The off campus housing was sketchy.I do remember that there were a lot of safety issues with students living off-campus in 2009.

Hi Caesar,

Apologies for the delay in replying; I appreciate the welcome and helpful information!

I've been narrowing down my areas of interests over the past few weeks. I'm considering of starting with land right now  to help me build equity. If you know anything about that, would you please PM me?

Thanks,

Alison

Hi Jared, thanks for the warm welcome and advice!

Pawling is reasonably close and is such a scenic town. The taxes are high in Carmel due to the school taxes. A friend lives in a newer neighborhood and the taxes are upwards of $20k per year. When I looked at a home in Lake Carmel, I couldn't believe they paid $10k for such a tiny plot of land! One can expect higher taxes in Westchester, but I'm reluctant to sign up for that in Carmel. Even condos can land you upwards of $10k per year once you add in the HOA fees.

Feel free to PM me; I'm curious how you ended up in Colorado. I visited Colorado Springs once, and it was amazing!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Alison, and I became interested in investing in real estate as I searched for my own home. The search thrust me into the world of co-ops (White Plains, NY), condos, single family homes, and multi-family homes. Plus, it led to all sorts of discussions about interest rates, move-in ready homes, fixer uppers, and what type of work on one is worth the return.

I've decided to wait to buy my own home so that I can potentially invest my savings and boost them first. This is my main priority for the next 6 months to a year.

I'm also interested in learning about real estate as a long term investment. I'm thinking of retirement income here.

I found biggerpockets.com via Apple podcasts and the forum from there. I also have some books I'm reading to educate myself on the industry and to narrow down my potential areas of interest.

I have a job, in financial markets, that I thoroughly enjoy, but I'm not looking to the markets for the additional income I'm looking to build.

Any helpful hints or resources you can direct me to would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Alison
