Welcome to BP. I am also in North Alabama, West of Huntsville. I have been trying to educate myself over the last 14 months, and am currently looking for my first deal. I hope to purchase a SFR in the next couple of months. There are several monthly networking opportunities in the area, ALAREIA hosted by Brian Trippe from Birmingham, Madison County Real Estate Investors Association, Tom Zurn hosts Tennessee Valley Real Estate Investors at Tim's Cajun Kitchen, John Morey has a monthly mixer at the clubhouse where he lives. There are probably more, but these are the ones I have personally attended. Good luck to you and welcome back to the area.

@Caleb Heimsoth - That was my concern...if I can claim expenses before making a purchase. But you nearly always have start up expenses. So, where do those come into play? Is not being able to claim those expenses just the cost of doing business?
