Have you considered doing both by house hacking? You buy a small multifamily property (2 to 4 units) which qualifies for owner-occupied residential financing similarly to a single-unit, live in one unit and rent the others, letting the others pay your mortgage and expenses, and learn as you go. Thank you! This is actually my first step. I live in the Rochester NY area. I just did the search and saw a few nearby but i feel so uninformed (although i read a lot on investing) and inexperienced that I start thinking I'm in over my head.

Everything! I have always been interested in real estate investment, BUT I don't know anyone who is actively doing it and succeeding at it. This causes me to fear taking the leap...

Hello there,

I have been saving to buy my first home (I'm currently house shopping).. BUT lately I been thinking a lot about investing first. I wouldn't have any help.

Would it be risky staring with a rental property and renting it out since I don’t know how to do any repairs and I don’t have any actual experience?
