You should consider buying shares in a large apartment complex though a multi family syndication. You get the benefits of owning multifamily real estate without having to find the perfect deal, fixing toilets and dealing with bad tenants. Great annualized returns between 13 and 25% and much safer than the stock market. Not to mention great tax benefits. You may end up paying zero capital gains tax.
