Post: Filing Income Taxes for a Fictitious Name Business

Hi there.

I am in the beginning stages of setting up my real estate business and have filed for an FBN to get started. I am not ready to start an LLC or an S corp at this time and will not until I have done at least a couple deals. I am not very tax literate and have never filed for anything other than a W2. How is filing them different with an FBN? How can I set myself up for success in the beginning? What can I write off? Direct mail expenses? Miles driven for work? etc... I will still be working a W2 job as well.

How is the current market for Orange County house hacks?

@Bob Couture

I lived just down the street in Chicopee actually. Rest of my family is still there as well.

Next time I'm in your neck of the woods, I'll be sure to give you a shout!

@Logan A.
I do happen to be in my 20s with no children and that is exactly the direction we are heading and I couldn't agree with you more.

Was playing around with your spreadsheet earlier actually and will definitely be using it to analyze properties. Thanks a lot!

I have a few questions already and will be sending you a message.

@Joe Homs

Will definitely look into that meetup and we'll stay in touch.

Hello all. My name is Dima and I'm originally from Western Mass. Currently residing in Brea, CA. Just over two months ago I got married and moved to SoCal with my wife right after our honeymoon. My wife is from Bend, OR area. I have no prior experience with real estate and I've never purchased a home before. My only real exposure to real estate is a few books that I've read on the topic and I was actually referred to these forums by reading one of Brandon Turner's books and this looks like a great place to begin my real estate education :) I'm just your average guy that is fed up with a 9-5 job and looking to become financially free in my future, but even more than that to get rid of the boss and free up my time to do the things I enjoy most, so I guess you can say I am highly motivated to look into this new venture. My present time goals are to educate myself about the real estate world while connecting with those who are where I want to be and hopefully finding someone who can mentor me in this area. And my next goal after that would be to acquire a multi-family home here in Orange County that would allow us to live rent-free or cheap in the same home. Thanks for stopping by. Looking forward to meeting some of you :)
