Hi Andrew, and welcome to BP. Generally if you jump on google (or your favorite search engine) and search for your county (or city, if independent) state assessor's office (i.e. "Harrisburg County TX assessor's office", you'll generally come up with an appropriate link to the relevant local government office. Some are called appraisers instead of assessors, etc, but you can generally tell by the context. Once you get to their page, with a little digging you'll see something related to searching for properties, tax info, etc...some GIS systems are located on the local government homepages as well and have good info. Usually you'll be able to find owner and sales histories, basic property info, assessment histories, and EXTERIOR top-down diagram i.e. drawing and dimensions of building perimeter, etc. They do vary greatly, but this approach, with a little digging, has always worked well for me. NETROnline, as mentioned previously, is also a great resource. Hope this helped.

i've noticed it doesn't work on my phone or tablet either (Safari, so unsurprising), or the computers at work (Security work tends to give me some spare computer time that they don't harass us about), though I can't give you specs from work. That said, I know I had it working via Safari on my Mac not too long ago. Sorry Brandon, not too helpful there, my apologies. On that note, I regret that I will not be purchasing your Super Guru Course for $999999997, but I must say you guys and J Scott did a fantastic job on the flipping and rehab books. I've already dog eared the heck out of them :-P Thanks!

@Brandon Turner, first method's not working out, so here's test number two. AND I thought your course was $.99997! Did you guys up the price? I'm going to throw this out shamelessly though, this site is the first place I've ever plugged in normal conversation, so don't take me too serious when picking on your TODAY ONLY, $999,997 Super Investor Course! ;-)Keep it up guys, you rock.

Brandon, congratulations on stepping down the path! I've actually got a friend in Granbury who owns and operates about twenty-some properties, and we're looking at possibly trying to go in on some things down there together (I'm in Virginia). That said, if you have any area specific or general rental questions, let me know and I'll see if I can link you two up, if you'd be interested. Take care and good luck!

@Christine P. awesome info re: the Ipad app, thanks! Also, I forgot to metnion earlier, I use a site called neighborhoodscout.com . Some on the site seem to have reservations about it, but what I've used it for has been fairly handy and pretty accurate. Hope some of this helps!

Richard, I'm leaning the exact same direction. I'm looking to invest out of state, and have the same questions. A couple other criteria I try to look for are schools, and appreciation. That should give some idea of what the area is like, as well as some degree of how the market is doing. I'll be interested to see what others have to say here, as well. Good luck Rich.

Daniel Dietz , I've started using Property Evaluator Pro, an Apple program. I don't know if they have a PC version, but it's off of realestatetools.com. I'm pretty well brand new to all of this, so I imagine there're more sophisticated tools out there, but I've been pretty impressed with the simple effectiveness of the program. Hope this helps!
