I think having a topic for this is good. When I originally posted about Herb VanDyken, I wasn't sure where to put it, so put it in foreclosures since that was one of the areas he was active in. Josh moved it to Bigger Pockets announcements.......I should have thought of that. The biggest reason I posted is when someone stops posting you never know if they're just inactive or if something happened. I also think if something could be placed on their profile indicating they have passed away that would be useful. I would keep it separate - strictly a memorial.

I know Herb would be pleased with all the nice comments and recognition. He loved Bigger Pockets! I will be printing this thread and giving it to his family at the service on Friday.

I wanted to let the Bigger Pockets members know that Herb VanDyken suddenly passed away yesterday. Herb loved nothing more than studying and talking about REI, and was a faithful reader of Bigger Pockets. I had the pleasure of meeting Herb through Bigger Pockets, and worked on several short sales that he referred to us. He worked hard, and was always looking for the next deal. He will be missed.

Learn your market, do your homework, and as Chris says surround yourself with the best.

I agree, and just posted something similar on another topic. I adhere to the saying.........."Those that can do, those that can't teach!" I'm always suspicious of the gurus. If you can make so much money following their advice, why aren't they out there doing it instead of making money teaching you how to do it? Although.....if anyone wants to pay me $5000 upfront and $500 a month to be my student, and learn how to successfully make money doing short sales, I might be persuaded. 10 students would make a nice little monthly income. By the way Jon, this is not a solicitation!

Seriously, I personally know a guy that has NEVER closed a short sale on his own, and he is all over social media talking about how much money he's made, and how successful he is. He gets people to pay him to be part of his mastermind group. It's all lies and a total scam. BEWARE and do your due diligence.

I agree with Curt. Not because the courses aren't good (never took one so don't know) but because there are many good ideas and ways of doing things, and I think it's good to explore several options and learn as much as you can. Welcome, Carl! This is a great place to ask questions and get advice. Just be sure that you have a plan and know what you're doing before you jump. It's better not to learn the hard way.

I have 3 bigger pocket members who have colleagued me. When I try to accept, it takes me to a "web page cannot be found" page. This has been going on for over a week. Please let me know how to get this fixed. I'd like to accept these colleagues.

Thanks for the compliment, Herb!

Actually I should credit Bigger Pockets with meeting Herb. He contacted me several months ago after seeing some posts, and we have completed several successful short sales that he referred to us. In fact I've been working tonight on a new referral from him, and also a purchase agreement on another. A profitable relationship....thanks to Bigger Pockets!

A couple of days ago I needed a good listing agent for a short sale we have in Southfield, Michigan. I searched Bigger Pockets for members in Southfield, and called Dan Gheesling. Within a few hours he texted me the name of an agent. I talked to her, and think she'll do a terrific job. Hats off to Bigger Pockets and Dan Gheesling for making my job easier!
