Thanks to everyone here for the warm welcome. I know I will learn a lot from you folks and I hope I can be of some help to whoever needs it.

Hi Richard,

Here are my thoughts on contractors having hired many as a general contractor. As others have said, get referrals from people you know and trust. Try to educate yourself about the general cost of the projects you need him (or her) to do so you will know if he is reasonable. If he is late for your first meeting, drop him. Pay attention to him as he looks over the job, if he is good he will ask a lot of questions take measurements and take notes. When you find a good one, treat him well.

I am Jim Birdsall, new here and just dipping my toe in. My goal is to learn the 'art of the deal' in order to someday invest myself. I have a wealth of experience in designing, building, rehab and estimating but know very little about the real estate business itself. My plan is to partner up with some investors, carry out the rehab, and watch the process from a safe distance, so to speak. Any help or advise from the community here will be greatly appreciated. I am attending all the REIA meetings in this area and getting to know the players. I also will be glad to answer any questions about rehabs and building.
