How long have you been investing in Alaska? You mentioned it hearing how challenging it can be here. Have you found it to be as hard as you've heard?

I also live in Anchorage and would like to start investing here when I can.

Sam W.

I don't have the expectation of instantly making money. I'm not looking to begin real estate without a source of income to work with.

What I'm trying to find out is if I should look for a job related to real estate, or get a job unrelated to it.

Basically I want to know if I should go with income + immersion or just income.

Joshua Dorkin, thank you.

I tried doing a search for it but had no idea what they were called.

Hello, I'm new here and I'm trying to figure out how people have names as links in their posts.

For example, if someone refers to another within a thread, they start with @name in blue as a link to their profile.

I'm a college student and I don't have a job right now, but I would like to get into real estate.

I was thinking about trying to work for a larger real estate company, even if my own position wouldn't have anything to do with real estate. My thoughts are that just being in a close proximity to people that do this for a living would give me networking opportunities and chances to learn from the people around me.

Would this be a good idea or would I be better off just finding a decent paying job unrelated to real estate and pursue real estate with local investors that I could meet through meetup.com?

Thank you Seth, I appreciate the support.

I'm also really glad I found that article by Brandon Turner. I'd still be holding myself back and waiting to get some positive support from someone before doing anything if I hadn't read his post.

Hello everyone,

My name is Justin Foster, I'm 22, and I live up here in Alaska. I'm going to college, but I don't want to rely solely on getting a degree and working for other people. I've been interested in investing for a while now and I've finally decided to take an active role to make the preparations I need to invest.

Of the types of investing, real estate has always had this appeal to it that makes it stand out from other types. Since I keep thinking about it regardless of how many times people tell me that it's risky and hard to do, I feel that real estate has enough appeal to me that I can use to push through challenges that I'll face.

Every time I mentioned real estate to anyone around me, I got only warnings and negativity, especially considering my age. This has been the single greatest obstacle to my getting involved with investing. A few days ago I got fed up with the pessimism around me and started searching for information on getting into real estate at a young age and stumbled upon http://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2013/02/09/how-to-start-investing-real-estate-young/ which addressed all the issues that I was facing.

After reading the article and checking out the ultimate beginner's guide that was linked on the same page, this website had me hooked. I'm really eager to learn more from everyone here and to take my first step into the world of real estate.
