Social media is simply word of mouth marketing - on steriods.  When performed the right way, social media can be extremely valuable.  When used the wrong way, it's a complete waste of time.  Learn how to use social media the right way (give value, connect with people, measure results..etc) and social media will be extremely worthwhile.

Let me explain the difference between a backlink and referring domain:

The 5,000 backlinks you mentioned from Ahrefs is really not important.  It's the referring domain that is important.  Because BiggerPockets.com is a reliable and trustworthy domain (63 domain rank according to Ahrefs), the link is valuable.  However, it's just one referring domain.  Your goal should be to obtain hundreds of quality referring domain links, not thousands of backlinks from ONE referring domain.  Make sense?

I'd rather have ONE backlink from CNN.com than thousands of backlinks from a small website.  Referring domains (quality referring domains) is the key, not the volume of backlinks from a particular domain.
