@Kashiff Miles I own a duplex that's a 1 BR/1 BA on one side, and a 5 BR/2 BA on the other ... they come in all shapes and sizes!

@Kashiff Miles that's a $100k duplex right there.  If you rent the other half, it costs you less and less to live there, while you build equity.  Bonus points if you find a duplex that's a 1 BR on one side and a 3 or 4 BR on the other, then you're really in it.

@Kashiff Miles have you calculated your front and back end ratios?  This will tell you how much house you can afford to buy.  It could be a good start, because it will help eliminate deals that are only possible, and not likely.

What you're looking for are called pocket deals.  You don't need a realtor to find something for sale, you need a realtor to help you connect with deals that have yet to be listed (less competition, possibly lower peripheral cost to acquire).

I imagine that Airbrb units in Cambridge do pretty well, with all of the MIT campus visits and such.  Do you have any clients in the suburbs, say like Newton, Framingham, or Quincy?

@Cassandra Staffieri excellent.

Start by looking for units for rent right next to the Market Basket.  There's a lot of cool little restaurants there, it's right on the bus line, and visitors can buy groceries for the long stays!

My wife lived in Somerville and Cambridge two of the last three years.  I'd advise staying away from the larger complexes (anywhere will and elevator or a lobby), look for 2/3/4 unit properties. Generally, these places aren't as polished, so I don't think it will be as difficult to talk to the landlords about it.
