Hi @Frank M. welcome to BiggerPockets! In Long Island, I am currently trying to figure out if I can convert my garage into another legal apartment and am using an architect to help me. Before the architect, we tried going to the building department directly, but they were extremely unhelpful and inconsiderate. I rather outsource this task to someone with more experience in this field than me. That way, I know it'll be done right, and I won't have to waste so much of my time. Hope this helps. Good luck!
