Hey Blake,
Go for it! In college, they never told me that I was going to change my mind later. They also never told me that I wouldn't be putting my GPA on my résumé 10 years later.
Once you experience anything new, it's pretty easy to figure out if you like it or not.
Hope you enjoy the ride!
Matt

Hi Chong,

Nice to meet you. Are you in Australia? Do you have a university degree? What is your interests in real estate? When you have time, I would suggest introducing yourself to the BiggerPockets community. Start a new topic in the New Members category. Before you spend a lot of money on a online degree, I would recommend reading real estate books and ask your questions on BiggerPockets.
Wishing you all the best!
Matt

Thanks for guiding me in the right direction, Bill! I very much appreciate your advice!

Thanks! What an awesome community where you just sign up and immediately feel welcome.

Jenkins,

I really appreciate the podcast recs and blogs! i'll definitely check them out. Thanks! Hope things are good in Milwaukee. Good to meet you

Joshua, what, you left Wisconsin for Florida? Ha ha. Almost May and still ice on the lakes.

Hi Bill,
Thanks a lot for your posting. To be considered as a second home, I'd have to leave one out the three units vacant all year long? Would you suggest that I just apply for a standard loan for an investment property and continue to rent all three units?

When I'm home I'd much rather continue to stay at my parents' house so it doesn't seem worth it unless I'd be a fool to pay a lot more money in interest.

Hi,
I have plans to purchase my first investment property in my hometown over the summer. It's listed as a triplex; however, the unit upstairs has a spare bedroom across the hall. My mentor encouraged me to look into owner-occupancy financing as an option. Considering the fact that I live and work overseas, would any lenders allow this? I do not want to pursue this option if it is in any way illegal or misleading.
Details:
My tax base is Japan; my salary is paid in yen.
I have never owned a home in the US.
I go home every summer for a few weeks and stay at my parents' house.
I currently use my parents' house as my home address, except for IRS
I have two open bank accounts in the area
I have a valid US drivers license
I do not have intentions to move

Thank you very much for your advice! If you would suggest an alternative for financing my first home from abroad, please let me know. I want to start off my career in real estate the right way.

Matt

Hello,

Thank you for all the great podcasts! I just started reading "Getting Things Done" that was mentioned in podcast #11 for beginner investors. I've read the books; now I am ready to take action and get it done.

My name is Matt Eisenhauer. I'm 33 years old and new to real estate investing, international school teacher based in Tokyo, Japan. I have plans to buy my first real estate property, a triplex located in my hometown, this summer.
I've been very fortunate to have a mentor who has been willing to walk me through the process step by step. Currently I'm looking into mortgage options. I'm looking to connect with other investors in the cheese state and others who have experience investing in the US from overseas.

So far it's been a lot of fun learning something new. Actually, I have applied a lot of what I've learned from my business and real estate reading to my classroom. My seven and eight year olds now have weekly goals and action plans taped to the top of their desks. Still, they are kids and from time to time they lose sight of their goals-- that's when they get a time out.

Thanks again for having me!

Matt
