@Michael Carbonare

Thanks for responding. One of the major appeals of a career in real estate investment is the independence it can provide, but I do worry about the stress that comes with how risky it is!

@Chris Seveny

Thanks for asking. I graduated from Williams College, and while it was a great school it unfortunately didn't have many classes directly related to business. I sort of constructed my education the best I could to prepare me for a career in real estate investment. This involved cobbling together a lot of urban planning, urban economics, and other courses into a History degree with a focus on Urban Studies.

Honestly, the best education I received while at college was on the management board of the college's independent, student-run business. That gave me experience as to what being a business owner actually involves, and the leadership responsibilities really matured me.

And yes, I'm hoping to work for a company involved in real estate to gain experience before going out to invest and develop on my own.

Thanks, and good point!

I worked at my extended family's development and construction company as an intern, and was involved with nearly every aspect of the development process:

- I assisted both the construction and development project managers in assembling bids, submitting RFIs, performing take-offs, etc.

- I worked with the leasing manager in marketing commercial retail space in the firm's 1.7 M SF portfolio.

- I started the process that led to a $1,650/mo lease with Tesla for a supercharging station on a mall property.

While I loved working with family and receiving mentorship from them, I'm dropping myself off in New York so I can build my own personal network and expertise outside my family. If anyone additionally has any insight on family businesses feel free to reach out!

Hi Everybody,

I recently graduated college and I'm trying to figure out how to chart a path from a professional career in real estate to future ownership. If anyone has insight on that or could tell me the story of their journey I would love to hear it. Especially stories that involve finding your first job. Feel free to DM me, or post your story down below!

Also, if you live in New York I'd be happy to meet up for coffee and chat.

Best,

Niko

Hi Everybody,

I recently moved to New York and would love to find a job in the value-added space. I gained a decent amount of expertise during two summer internships at a construction/real estate development firm in the Pacific Northwest, but now want to really hone my skills in the real estate capital of the world--New York City.

Also, if you're reading this and could offer some networking/career development advice feel free to DM me I would love to chat!

Best,

Niko
