@Michelle G. Was that your first property? Are you still investing in turnkeys or have you moved onto something else? Thanks.

@Jon Krombein I hope you don't mind that I'm following up here. Now that you've been in it for around 1 year, how has your experience been? Did you purchase any subsequent properties through Roofstock or any similar company?

Also, did you make your first (and subsequent) purchase(s) site unseen?

Thanks!

@Sam B. to echo others, thanks for this; it is awesome! Good luck! Congrats! Etc.!

In your initial post here, you said that you have a portfolio before taking on this challenge. Do you mind going into more detail about your previous experience? Thanks.

@Demario Sanford I second (forth?) the VA loan. I only add that you should buy as many units as fit your investment appetite. Don't force a 4 unit if you'd be overpaying or moving into a neighborhood you wouldn't want to live in, etc. You may find that a 2 or 3 unit will be the better investment, at least for the time being. Don't forget that this will be your home for a little while.

But if the 4 unit works out, more power to ya!

@Jeshua Patrick what ever happened with the rest of your story?

I have considered the idea of liquidating my retirement accounts, as well. If I can build a pool of assets which pay me income today until forever, do I really care if I have extra money sitting in a retirement account that I cannot touch for years? The point of money is to be able to turn it into action - I like saying "money is a means to a means."

Additionally, I'm not certain but I believe that every penny of withdrawal taken out of a (non-Roth) 401k/IRA during retirement is taxed at your ordinary rate, which is likely to be higher than tax preferred treatment of real estate.

@Zach Zimmer thank you!

Do you self-manage your portfolio or use a third party?

@James Galla Thanks for the feedback, those are some really good points you bring up. Sounds like you might disagree regarding Akron and Canton - do you think the area is moving in the right direction?
