I went ahead and sent off a sample myself to be tested because frankly I don't trust the landlord as far as I can throw him. Never had a good landlord, which is why I'm buying now. We'll see what happens.

I live in a rental that was built in '82 (or at least that's as far back as the deeds go on the county appraisal website). Anyway, the upstairs bathtub has started leaking into the laundry room below, and there's a small hole in the ceiling. The house has acoustic ceilings and since I'm buying a house now, I am familiar with the fact that there may be asbestos in the popcorn ceiling. Even though the manufacture of asbestos was banned in like '78, they continued to use it. The landlord is telling me the house isn't old enough for asbestos and I doubt they will test for it because their "handyman" says they don't need to. What options do I have? What if I test it myself and it comes back positive? I have a young child and I'm terrified of her being exposed to something like that.

Thanks, I kind of assumed they wouldn't, as it doesn't look easy or particularly safe to disassemble. I just figure they're hiding the loch ness monster and a couple million mosquito eggs underneath, maybe the guy they foreclosed on is under there too, who knows...

Is it a terrible idea to run the pump without being able to see the pool? Either way the bank is going to want a quote to repair to working condition.

I'm attempting to purchase a HUD foreclosure (as an OO) and it's got a nice sized a pool in the back. It's been winterized and covered with treated lumber, plastic (think garbage bags) and metal fencing sections. I would really like to get a pool guy out to look at the vinyl liner, but HUD's people at Prescient are stating they won't remove the cover.

Has anyone run into this predicament? I'm doing a 203k loan and supposedly all they need is something on a pool contractor's letterhead saying everything's in operational condition, or I guess a repair quote.

I talked to the guy who installed the pool and he said the liner's 2 years old but has been pretty neglected. He said he could get it replaced for $2500 tops, but that it probably doesn't need replacing.
