Post: Removing a tenant for family move in, Oakland CA

I want to purchase the duplex that i have been living in and move my parents into the other unit, in Oakland CA. I'm concerned that the tenant in the other unit will put up a fight that will ultimately make the deal a bad. If anyone is familiar with the current situation in Oakland, and my specific situation, I'd love to hear what you have to say about it. Thanks.

Hi Hanna. I’ve read many good responses to your question, but I’ll put in my two cents. Avoid bad deals. The BiggerPockets resources, especially the calculators, will help you analyze potential deals. Also, you might want to listen to BiggerPockets podcast #223 where Scott Trench discusses his book, “Set For Life.” He recommends deals that work regardless of the direction of the real estate market or the economy. This approach reduces risk significantly.

Hi Te'Erinn. I have been learning by listening to podcasts, watching youtube videos, and reading books and blog posts (the BiggerPockets web site has good specific recommendations). In addition, I’d recommend going to real estate investment meetings in your area, making friends, and exchanging work for knowledge (or some similar arrangement) so that you can supercharge your skills without taking too much risk (see the BiggerPockets Events page, or google the topic). Good luck!
