I empathized with her, and certainly don't want to  be like a grinch, but made me realize maybe my timing was bad. 

Now, I do empathize with getting to where you are now even if you do make that change. 

Moreover, it sounds like you are empathizing way too much with your tenants; this is a business that should be handled with dignity and compassion but at the end of the day, it's still a business. 

Weigh the pros and cons of each step you take and remember to always be professional, empathic and kind.

When our tenants approach us with a concern, we strive to first; listen to the individual, empathize with them, explore the reason why this is a concern for them and determine the direct cause of the issue.

It's one thing to empathize with their situation and wish them well, it's another to subsidize their late payments. 

If on the otherhand you have the"caregiver" gene and genuinely like to help people and can empathize with the stresses (over buying and selling) and emotions and act in parental role with complete strangers then i am sure you will be unstoppable in this field.
