But it’s easy to find a lot of people with fancy cell phones, all sorts of “necessities” like newer cars, expensive cable plans, eating out/partaking in services, etc.I think the US “normal” spending habits help the economic numbers look good, but also think if every American, myself included, kept a little more in savings, the economy would still be pretty good.

I would just take whatever you were approved for, not change ANYTHING (because you will likely never get it done), set up a separate bank account for the proceeds, not touch the funds UNLESS (a) it's for an expense that is clear cut with zero ambiguity that you can point to the agreement and see it stated in the language, and/or (b) it's an absolute necessity to use it.

Comfortable bed with nice bedding, room darkening/blackout curtains in bedroom, decent shower, in unit washer/dryer, decent kitchen with all the necessities, good wifi, and a decent smart TV, iron, etc..- I travel with my wife, baby, and dog.
