Yes, that sounds like it may be difficult to overcome. 

The contestability period is just as difficult to overcome for title insurance (and therefore mortgages, etc.) as the redemption period; effectively properties sold at a Texas tax auction will need to mature for two years before title insurance can be obtained.Struck-off properties may be closer to or even past the redemption and contestability periods and may sometimes be available at less than the original minimum bid amount. 

I've had to try to overcome my own prejudices over the years having grown up in an all white suburb of Detroit in the 60's.

I read a lot on real estate too, but wanted to branch out for some variety and particular focus on biographies to get better ideas of the challenges that they had to overcome. 

The fact is, this is an unusual situation and we all have to work together to overcome it.

We can adapt and overcome these issues.

First, continue learning as much as you can until you overcome the shiny-object phase.

The return for a flip, especially if you've overcome the lead paint issue, would put you in another bracket as well.As for the existing 2 bedroom,  I'd try to switch the living room with that one bedroom upstairs unless it's normal in that area to have living rooms downstairs.

However, the way to overcome the fear is to be prepared.
