My brother-in-law, a fire marshal, told me that even if the smoke detector is a melted lump of plastic and metal, they can easily determine if it was operational at the time of fire.

Have you ever looked into the dumpster "bags" if they have those in your area?

The plastic tube that brings water to the fridge to make ice cubes became brittle, broke and water leaked all over the kitchen floor.

The other thing you can do is put some plastic (like they use to hold in insulation) under the home and tack it to the floor joists. 

Seems like it's a mixed bag in terms of landlords who are willing to negotiate.
