Has anyone else had to make a similar decision and if so, how did you choose? 

Might be scary at first saying you are the decision maker and saying no but it comes with time and practice.

She is currently working full-time and I was in my first semester of medical school when I made the decision that I wanted to begin pursuing real estate full-time, so I'm currently searching but have several interviews lined up.

We recently got denied at Bank of America for a HELOC and their decision was based on a bankruptcy that we have close to 3 years ago.

That should factor into your decision making.

This will weigh in heavily on my decision, as he is somewhat invested (Involves work and his daughter).  

So, I would run the numbers and then consider the intangible benefits before making a decision. 

If there is an exception I would probably retain an attorney even while waiting for a decision from the insurer.
