Certificate of Occupancy
Hello, I purchased a duplex in belleville nj feb 2025, with both tenants living there, I finally removed 2nd floor & going to renovate 2nd floor soon so i can rent it out. Im just remembering about the C of O. Should I get one for first floor only or do they inspect both floors or wait till I finish renovation. Or do I only need it for the 2nd floor, since it's the only turnover unit & get a copy of the previous C of O for the first floor since they been living there 4 years. Not sure how it works exactly

Hi @Marvin Bracamonte when unit gets turned over CO is required. If you stays rented for a few years with same tenants CO is not required. These laws will vary from time to time and town to town so always good to check in with town and ask questions. Also verify with Belleville what is required, sometimes are very basic and require just smoke cert other towns may be more in depth. What's most important is taking care of the items you know the town is coming to check so you do not fail. Talk with your neighbor, he can give you good advice in regards to how town is :)
