Is wholesaling the best way to start investing in Real Estate?

Work like hell. Save all your money. Minimize all your expenses. Buy a duplex/triplex with an FHA, live in the dump and rent out the nice parts. Stay there for one year. Refi out of FHA. Repeat.
To answer your question: not in my opinion. Wholesalers without a good process and good book of contacts are just about worthless to investors. And wholesaling is a job, it is not investing.
