Advice for new REI with $500k cash

Ryan Bunch
Posted

I am a new real estate investor with a large amount of capital.  I am constantly consuming, trying to read and learn as much as possible over the last 6 months.  I wanted opinions from experienced investors on where they would start if they had $500k cash.  I would obviously need to find an experienced partner that I trust, but would you start with a large multifamily/apartment?  Become a hard money lender?  Other ideas?  Maybe I am ignorant but it seems like starting by buying small rental properties would not be the best way to leverage my cash.  Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Hi @Ryan Bunch and welcome to BiggerPockets!

Actually, it's not at all about the amount you have to invest; it's all about your specific investment objectives.

Are you looking for a certain monthly cash flow? Are you trying to massively grow your asset base? Is liquidity important to you? Do you want to be an active investor or is a passive role more your speed? What's your time frame for investing: months, years, decades, centuries?

Without having this info, and much more, there's no way anyone can offer you useful, relevant advice.

That will always be true, whether you have $5, $500K, or $50M.
