Would you guys recommend working for free with someone who has a lot of knowledge in real estate investing on the side to gain more experience? 

@Brittany Fusco for what purpose?  If you just want to invest hands on experience isn't necessary, but if it helps you then great, go for it.  If hoping for experience to put towards a job then there is no reason not to get paid for your efforts and be somewhat close to the final goal.
