Why do people's icons appears up side down and sideways?

I have seen several that sometimes appear up side down and sometimes not.  Some appear sideways.

At first I thought people were just trying to be artsy and clever.  But since some of them sometimes change I'm wondering if it has something to do with back end rendering.

OK...so we may have narrowed it down to Apple mobile devices.  Whatever...everyone just needs to know...I generally have my head screwed on straight!!!  ;-)
