Tax Foreclosure Title Pitfalls?

I am considering some properties on the Tax Foreclosure list for Whatcom County, WA. The auction is coming up at the end of November. The county web-site has a lot of warnings about the risks of these foreclosures.

How big are the title risks on these properties and what is the best way to research them to assure myself of a clean title?
