Is there any way to get around having to live in the home as a primary residence? and if not how much of the time would you have to be there?

One way to get around the FHA requirements for primary residence would be mortgage fraud. On a more helpful note - you need to live there for 12 months. Most financing options that have low barriers to entry (low down payments) are going to have some sort of owner-occupied stipulation.
