Looking to move some of my IRA into Self Directed. Looking to find a good manager & fair manager. Tell me WHO do you LOVE!?!

I can confirm... after almost an hour on the phone and 4 different people, Vanguard does NOT have a product for Solo or Self Directed IRA. You can however set up a SOLO 401K and hold funds at the institution of your choice, including Vanguard in the name of the SOLO 401K trust.

@Tania Reuben What are your reasons to switch plan providers, if your retirement plan is already a solo k? In your original post, you mentioned looking for a manager. Most Custodians/ Administrators of SDIRA's and Solo 401(k) are prohibited from providing investment and tax advice, so you would want to seek out that kind of advice from another professional.

For my self directed IRA with a checkbook LLC, I am using SunWest Trust. The fees are low and so far I have had no issue with them.

I use Quest Trust. If you're new, they're very helpful in walking you through how everything works. However, I'm probably going to switch to a Checkbook control IRA to save on transaction and administration fees.

@Tania Reuben - if you can get a Solo 401K plan going, that is much better than the SDIRA alternatives. While you still have to follow the rules of SDIRA in terms of prohibited transactions, self-dealing, etc, it has many more advantages: • Compared to an IRA, Solo 401k contributions limits are roughly ten times higher.There is no custodial requirement for the 401k.You don't need the additional expense and administration of an LLC to have checkbook control.There is a built in-Roth component whereas IRAs are either traditional or Roth, not both.A spouse can also participate in the same Solo 401k plan.The Solo 401k has additional tax benefits over an IRA when investing into real estate using leverage.The penalties for prohibited transactions are less severe. • Tax deduction, this plan allows contributions up to $61,000 per year per participant. Husband/wife team can potentially lower their taxable income by over $120,000! Think about the tax savings as a result of that (this would also likely result in the lower tax bracket). The only disadvantages I know are: - you need to have self-income. - you can't have employees in the company establishing the plan (only you and your spouse). - you can't roll over Roth IRA money. Speak with @Dmitriy Fomichenko for more details on how to get one going.

@Tania Reubens you should consult whoever set it up for you and check your plan docs for proper titling of the transfer. Once I ou have that, then go for it. You won't regret the move. Godd luck!

Hi Costin. The parts of your post that were copied exactly from my previous post are accurate. One correction to the info you added, however: Contribution limits for this year are $56,000 per participant. If a participant is age 50 or older, catch-up contributions allow for a total annual contribution of up to $62,000.
