Transferring funds between financial institutions and US Bank

How do you transfer funds between banks, credit unions and the like? I have found long lag times moving money into US Bank even with Zell. I know US Bank is a regional bank so a little questionable maybe. Short of writing a paper check it seems with all other ways to transfer funds electronically waiting days seems wrong. BTW have a long history with US Bank having had decent in house financing when other lenders drug their feet.

@Chris Seveney right some banks make external transfers immediate.

Good question about why multiple banks. I have found credit unions the quickest way to establish HELOC's whereas the larger banks offer better services.
